Here's a number worth sitting with: for a native English speaker in the US, becoming conversational in German is worth roughly $170,000 over a working career. That's not a marketing stat. It's a peer-reviewed wage study run through the math a rising salary actually follows over a career.
That's the good version of this question, and it has research behind it, in both directions: what a second language is worth to an English speaker, and what English is worth to everyone else. Below is what the second language salary premium actually looks like, translated into dollars per year, dollars over a lifetime, and dollars per hour of study, not just an abstract percentage, and that's not mentioning all the practical and personal benefits to learning a language.

How Much More Do Bilingual Workers Make in the US?
The best US wage study that separates the payoff by language still holds up two decades later.

The reverse direction has a broader research base and, often, much larger estimates. These are adjusted wage differences, not interchangeable causal effects: each study defines proficiency and handles selection differently.

One plausible reading of the Korean result is that English had become table stakes: valuable for entering professional work, but too widespread to separate one worker's pay from another's. A skill can matter enormously without producing a measurable wage premium once many competing candidates already have it.
Is Learning a Language Worth It? The Hourly Return
This is the same English-speaker data from the first table, run one step further: divide the lifetime payoff by the hours it actually takes to reach B2, and a study session turns into an hourly wage.

At two hours a day, B2 German takes about 15 months. Put next to almost any hourly wage a beginner is currently earning, that's not a hobby. It's one of the better-paying things a person can do with a weeknight.
Why Does the Bilingual Salary Premium Vary So Much?
Four forces explain most of the spread across both tables.
- Scarcity beats popularity. Scarcity may help explain why the measured German premium was larger than the Spanish premium. A job that needs German has a smaller pool of American professionals to hire from. The useful question is not how many people speak a language worldwide, but how many qualified candidates speak it where an employer needs it.
- Use matters more than knowledge. A 2010 Canadian labor-economics study found substantial, significant earnings gains for Quebec workers who use English on the job, and almost nothing for English-speakers who merely know French outside Quebec. A language sitting unused on a résumé is a different economic object than one used in a client call every week.
- Are the benefits just for high-income people? No. A 2023 US Census-based study found bilingual wage gains land hardest for workers already near the bottom of the income ladder, not the ones already doing fine. It's less a résumé flourish and more a genuine lever for the people who need one.
- It scales up, not just down. Switzerland's national statistics office and the University of Geneva put the economic value of the country's multilingualism at roughly 9% of GDP, about CHF 46 billion. The premium isn't just an individual raise; it shows up at the level of a whole economy too.

That modest number fits the wider research better than a giant universal premium would. A major Journal of Economic Literature review finds that language can affect earnings, but the return changes with the language and the market around it. A meta-regression covering 61 primary studies and 258 estimates finds that economic conditions, linguistic context, and the research method materially change the measured payoff. Comparable research and payroll rules point in the same direction: European workers who use a foreign language at work average about 2%, bilingual US nurses have measured just over 4%, Berkeley pays 2% or 5%, and the Defense Department's tested proficiency bonus can reach $1,000 a month. These findings make 1–2% a conservative baseline, not a promise: jobs that actively need the language can pay more, while jobs that never use it may pay nothing.
