Yes. Beginner stories are built from the highest-frequency characters and often include pinyin alongside them, so you can start reading before your recognition is solid. You learn characters by meeting them repeatedly in context, which is faster and stickier than drilling them one by one.

The HSK levels are tied to set vocabulary and character lists, and graded stories put those exact characters in front of you in real sentences. Reading at and just above your HSK level builds the recognition speed and vocabulary the test rewards, and trains you to read connected text rather than isolated words.

More than you would expect. Reading a character means recalling its sound, and its tone is part of that sound, so silent reading quietly reinforces the tones you have learned. Reading and listening together lock them in, which is why stories with audio are especially useful.

Start at A1 if you are early in Mandarin; those stories use the most common characters with pinyin support. Move up when a level feels easy on a single read. Roughly, A1 to A2 overlaps with the lower HSK bands, and B1 to B2 with the middle ones.
